Best budget-friendly dry shampoos

For many years my stylist told me to stop washing my hair everyday, but I wouldn’t listen. Although my hair was dry and brittle, I continued with my usual morning routine of shampooing, conditioning, blow drying and curling. I was destroying my hair, yet the idea of not washing it every morning was unthinkable. I was afraid it would look greasy.  What I didn’t realize, is that I was scrubbing away the moisture and nutrients my hair needed to be healthy.

Then, one day while away at a friend’s cottage, I was introduced to dry shampoo and I haven’t looked back. since. Instead of washing my hair everyday, I only do it a few times a week. The best part of all? My hair has never looked better!

If you are not familiar with dry shampoo, it’s a powdered substance that absorbs the oil from your scalp and hair. It doesn’t necessarily clean your hair, as the name might suggest, but it does give it the appearance of looking fresh; buying you a few extra days between washes.  For the best result, I use it before going bed, giving the formula all night to work it’s magic. Then, I brush it out in the morning.

When I look back on the time I once wasted, and extra sleep I missed out on, only to inflict damage on my hair, I regret that someone didn’t tell me about this amazing product sooner.  As the old saying goes though: better late than never!

Almost all of the major hair care brands have their own version now, and you can spend as little as $5.00 to over $50.00 for a bottle. You don’t need to spend a lot though.

There are fantastic options in the lower end of that range, and these are my favourite budget-friendly options:

tressemeTresemme
(Approx. $7 for 161g)

Of the drug store brand dry shampoos, this is my preference. It has a pleasant scent and although it feels a little sticky when it’s applied, it’s fine once it dries.

batisse

Batiste
(Approx. $8 for 90g

Many dry shampoo proponents I know swear by this one, and for good reason. It’s great. The scent is so fresh and it doesn’t leave any residue.

Cake Satin Sugar Glistening Dry Shampoo and Body PowderCake
(Approx. $18 for 50g)

It’s a little more expensive, but it’s by far my favourite. Unlike many of the other options, it’s a powder, packaged with a shaker top, rather than an aerosol, making it a better choice from an environmental perspective. Plus, it smells like cookies.

Pssssst – here are our top 5 reasons to use a dry shampoo:

  • It provides glamour on-the-go by keeping your hair fresh and smelling great – even after you break a sweat at the gym. It’s also the perfect companion while you’re travelling.
  • Adds added volume and texture in an instant.
  • No washing or blow-drying necessary, meaning fewer split ends.
  • It’s a huge time-saver – meaning you can sleep in and catch some extra zzz’s in the morning.
  • It helps to preserve your hair colour while yo’re in between salon visits.
