How to be a sophisticated stunner at work

Spring and summer is the best time of year because it means we can bring out our colourful dresses and brightly patterned tops. However, warmer weather also means shorter hemlines and no sleeves, which can pose a problem for the workplace.Whether you work in business-casual, ultra-casual or a very professional atmosphere, there are certain rules that you should follow.

Here are some useful tips and tricks to make sure you look your best in the workplace:

skirt

1. No matter how casual your office is, spaghetti straps and low-cut anything are NOT appropriate. An easy way to fix this problem is to wear a tank-top or camisole underneath your dress. If you are wearing a brightly patterned dress go for a solid tank in a complementary colour. If you just need to cover up, choose a cute cardigan; short sleeve cardigans also work well in very hot weather.
A great option: Old Navy Rib-Knit 3/4 Sleeve Cardigan

2. Even if the weather outside is 103 degrees, short shorts are NOT OK ! Even if you see other people wearing shorts that are very short it doesn’t mean you should too. Set the standard and you’ll stand out in a sea of denim and cut offs. If it’s so hot and you can’t handle it, choose a skirt in a lightweight breathable fabric like linen or a polyester/cotton mix.
A great option:Forever 21 Scalloped Lace Pencil Skirt

3. Open toe shoes might be ok, but flip flops are not. There are so many great sandal options out there that even if you can wear flip-flops to work (because your work is that casual) well, it doesn’t mean you should. If you’re worried about wearing high-heeled sandals all day at work, consider wearing flats during your commute and change into a great pair of wedges once you get to the office to save your feet!
A great option: Franco Sarto Buckle Sling Back

4. Save the neon for your nails. One of my favourite parts of the spring/summer season is the acceptability of painting my nails very bright colours. I absolutely love hot pink so I can’t wait for the opportunity to wear it and not be judged. Even though hot pink, neon orange and bright green scream the seasons are changing, they should be reserved for nails and accessories only – not clothing.
A great option: Essie Bottle Service nail colour – Scorching Neon Fuchsia

5. Keep accessories to a minimum. Keep accessories to a minimum. Considering you’ll most likely be wearing more patterns than ever, keep accessories to a necklace or earrings, rather than huge earrings and a big statement necklace. If you’re going out at night, bring out a larger pair of earrings to change into after work.
A great option: House of Harlow necklace

Remember that you can set your own trends – just because you see someone else in the office being more lax with the office dress code doesn’t mean you have to follow suit. Spring and summer is a great time to experiment but you should always dress for the job you want, not the job you have. Even if you work as a secretary at an office right now, but aspire to be a lawyer, dress like the other lawyers and they’ll take notice!
