Whether you’re in the desert sun, humid heat of the city or wet, muddy hilltop grounds, outdoor summer music festivals have (literally) never been hotter. Festivals like Coachella, Bonnaroo, Osheaga and Lollapalooza can call for challenging weather conditions, which also calls for challenging fashion decisions. We researched the most popular pieces to wear and pack when heading out to an open air festival this summer. If you weren’t lucky enough to score festival tickets this year, you can still look extra boho chic with these few tips (that don’t need to break your bank!)

The idea of “layering” pieces of eccelectic and vibrant jewellery started a few years ago and has stayed. The idea of “less is more” does not apply to summer jewellery – especially at festivals. Headbands, thick bangles, floppy hipster hats, flowers in your hair…anything goes, and the more, the better. Store scores: Forever 21, Brandy Mellville, H and M

High-waisted shorts

Ah, who would have thought Kelly Kapowsky’s high-waisted Levi’s or the acid washed Calvin Klein’s iconically worn by Kate Moss would ever reappear? No matter what the colour, fabric, length or wash, high-waisted shorts are a must – and are usually quite flattering on any body type.

In hot, humid, sticky summer weather, everyone’s first go-to is gladiator sandals or comfy, light flip flops. These are not the best options at outdoor festivals when you’re feet will probably get stepped on or jumped on – or worse, who knows the kind of stuff your poor, fresh pedicured feet will walk through. Boots (knee or ankle length) go perfectly with any outfit (dresses or shorts), and not only will you look uber stylish – but
your feet will thank you by the end of the festival weekend.

The perfect maxi
The perfect, wavy, long and chic summer maxi dress seems to be every girl’s summer
fashion goal each year. The best thing about maxi dresses is that they are ideal for hot weather and can instantre seizedly make any body shape look long and lean. Be sure to avoid black (don’t trap in heat!) and find one that isn’t overly too long for your body height.

Cooling down
Depending on the location of the festival, most climates that are brutally hot during the day tend to get really cool at night. Since you want to pack really light, try bringing a funky old bed sheet or thin blanket to sit on during the day (you will get tired of walking!) or to wrap yourself around at night. Ponchos and “Mexico-inspired” blankets have made a huge comeback in the last few years – especially at west coast festivals.
